There's a wrong way to make cinnamon toast (sprinkle cinnamon at dry toast, watch it bounce off) and a right way: mix cinnamon into sugar, and press it into butter while the toast is hot enough to half-melt everything into a thin, crackly glaze. The right way costs you one extra step and pays you back roughly one childhood.
You’ll need
-
Bread
2 slices -
Butter
enough to cover, melted in -
Cinnamon
half a teaspoon -
Sugar
about a tablespoon
Salt, pepper, oil, and water are assumed — if the salt is missing too, we can’t help tonight.
The way through
- Mix about a tablespoon of sugar with a half teaspoon of cinnamon in whatever tiny dish is closest. This ratio matters more than any other part.
- Toast the bread properly — darker than pale, it needs structure.
- Butter it edge to edge the second it pops, so the butter fully melts.
- Spoon the cinnamon sugar over the top and tilt the toast around so it spreads into the butter. It should go slightly wet and glossy. That's the glaze forming.
- Cut diagonally. It genuinely tastes better cut diagonally and no one has ever explained why.
Night-kitchen noteMake double the cinnamon sugar and keep it in a little jar by the toaster. Future-you, standing in the same spot next week, will be grateful.
