Assembly, not cooking: crackers with cream cheese and a little jam on top is a combination that has been quietly excellent since forever — sweet, tangy, rich, crunchy, all in one bite. Add apple slices or a folded piece of deli meat and it becomes a tiny solo charcuterie board at an hour when charcuterie has no right to be happening.
You’ll need
-
Crackers
a good handful -
Cream cheese
a few spoonfuls No cream cheese? Thick yogurt, in a shallow bowl version. -
Jam or jelly
a small spoonful per cracker No jam or jelly? Honey, or thin apple slices with cinnamon. -
Apple
optional
1, sliced thin -
Deli meat
optional
a few folded pieces
Salt, pepper, oil, and water are assumed — if the salt is missing too, we can’t help tonight.
The way through
- Lay out a handful of crackers on a plate.
- Spread or dollop cream cheese on each one. Cold cream cheese dollops fine with a spoon; no need to wait for it to soften.
- A small spoonful of jam on top of the cream cheese. Less than you think — it's a accent, not a layer.
- Slice an apple thin and tuck the slices between the crackers, or fold some deli meat alongside if you want it savory.
- Eat slowly. This one is not about speed.
Night-kitchen noteHot honey or a few dashes of hot sauce over the jam layer sounds wrong and is extremely right.
